Managing the BCG “boil” in your infant
It’s been a few weeks since your baby had the BCG immunisation, and initially it looked like nothing was happening there. Then you notice the site begins to swell, and pretty soon there is a “boil” right there! What is to be done?
First, we advise you do not massage or compress or “burst” it. If it does burst by itself, and the pus spills out, you are advised to carefully clean and properly dispose the cotton wool you use to wipe it Subsequently, keep the site clean and dry. You can use cooled boiled water to clean the area, pat it dry with a clean cause, dispose of the gauze properly and carefully, and wash your hands. Always wash your hands after dealing with such lesions- and it is especially important with the BCG boil.
Do not cover the site. Air promotes healing, so this is the best thing to do. Avoid tight clothing, and do not apply any ointments, medicines, creams or antiseptics. Resist the temptation to pick at it once it begins to heal. If the area begins to swell again or the healing is delayed, take baby to the clinic and report. If possible, you should have photos so they can see the progression of the swelling.
